Links inspires AGF's European charge

SA Players Abroad

In arguably his most impressive outing yet, Gift Links boosted his side's hopes of qualifying for Europe next season with a Man of the Match performance, but the prospects of some of South Africa's other players abroad are looking less promising.

Gift Links

Links continued his fine form for AGF Aarhus this season with a Man of the Match performance in his side's 1-0 win over Copenhagen on Sunday. The 21-year-old featured as a 65th-minute substitute and changed the course of the match for Aarhus, who are now just four points behind their second-placed opponents, and nine points clear of Brondby in the race for a European play-off.

Lars Veldwijk

Just days after confirming to that he expects to leave Jeonbuk Motors, Bafana Bafana striker Veldwijk once again featured as a late substitute for the reigning K League 1 champions. The Dutch-born forward was unable to turn things around for his side, however, as they succumbed to only their second defeat of the season in a 1-0 loss to Sangju Sangmu.

Thibang Phete

Phete made his 10th appearance of the campaign for Belenenses on the weekend, but it was a night to forget for player and club as they suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat to Primeira Liga leaders FC Porto. Phete featured as a 64th-minute substitute but added to his side's woes when he fouled Luis Diaz in the box, allowing Alex Telles to slot home from the resultant penalty kick.

Kgotso Masangane

There were better fortunes for Metta/LU striker Masangane in Latvia, where he scored his first goal of the season during his side's 3-1 win over Tukums on Friday. The 22-year-old has now started in each of the club's five matches this season, having scored six times in 29 appearances during the 2019 campaign.

Tom Barkhuizen

In England, Barkhuizen saw his hopes of playing in the Premier League suffer a heavy blow after Preston North End played out a 0-0 draw with Huddersfield. The Blackpool-born forward featured for 89 minutes of the match but was unable to steer his side to victory, with Preston now sitting six points behind Cardiff City in the race for the promotion play-offs with only five matches remaining.

Ricardo Nunes

Ex-Bafana Bafana defender Ricardo Nunes, who recently signed a short-term extension with Pogon Szczecin, featured for 77 minutes on Sunday as his side all but blew their chances of European football next season. Having led 2-0 against Jagiellania Bialystok in the first half, 10-man Pogon contrived to throw away their lead in the second half to hand their opponents a share of the points.

Ayabulela Konqobe & Darren Smith

Konqobe and Smith both featured for Ekenas during the club's 0-0 draw with VPS on Saturday. The Finnish outfit are now third in the league standings after winning their opening match last week, with both players getting their names on the scoresheet on that occasion.

Mihlali Mayambela

Mayambela was an unused substitute on Wednesday as Bnei Yehuda concluded their Israeli Premier League campaign with a 4-0 win over Hapoel Ra'anana. The 23-year-old scored once in seven appearances since joining the club on loan from Farense in January, and will now begin planning for his future ahead of next season.
