Gerrard issues plea amid Zungu talk

Steven Gerrard has sent a clear message to the Rangers board as the race to land Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu heats up.

Zungu returned to Amiens first-team on Saturday during their 0-0 draw with Pau but could still find himself leaving the club before the transfer window shuts on October 5.

As reported by earlier this month, personal terms have already been agreed with the Scottish Premier League giants but Amiens' asking €4-million asking-price is said to have stalled the deal.

With Gerrard still in contact with the former Mamelodi Sundowns star, he's once again reiterated his desire to add another central midfielder to his squad but it could depend on their qualification for the UEFA Europa League group stages.

The Gers face Galatasary tomorrow in their final play-off round and is said to be waiting for chairman Douglas Park to action the deal with Olympiakos now also mooted as a possible destination.

"I think I've made it pretty clear what I feel we need. But I also respect the board’s position in the current climate and the situation that we’re in," he said in their pre-match press conference, as per The Mirror.

"I do think that depending on whether we qualify or not would depend on what we try and do in the final days. But I think that’s a question for people who are above me at the club.

"I can't really answer that question right now but I’ve made it pretty clear what I feel we need to keep moving forward, to make sure that we don’t stand still."
