Deadline set for Rangers to sign Zungu

SA Players Abroad

With the Scottish transfer window officially being cleared to open, title hopefuls Rangers now know the deadline for them to sign reported target Bongani Zungu.

On Tuesday, after the Scottish Football Association had sent through a request to FIFA for a revised transfer window period amid the coronavirus pandemic, the market officially opened in Scotland ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

The new window will run until midnight on Monday, 5 October 2020, keeping in line with FIFA's demands that no such window should be open for longer than a 12-week period.

This decision has potential ramifications for Bafana Bafana midfielder Zungu, who has been strongly linked with a move to Rangers in recent weeks, with manager Steven Gerrard said to have made personal enquiries about the 27-year-old.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns star currently plays for Amiens but is expected to leave the club after their relegation from Ligue 1, with agent Alexis Ramalingam having confirmed to Kickoff.com that a number of clubs are interested in the player's services.

The upcoming Scottish Premiership campaign kicks off on 1 August 2020, and it is likely that Rangers will look to conclude their transfer business before then, but the club will still be able to register new signings until 5 October.

Previous reports suggested that Amiens are demanding a figure of about €5 million (R95 million) for Zungu, which is double the amount the club reportedly paid to sign him from Vitoria Guimaraes in 2017.
