In KRC Genk's first home match since Anele Ngcongca's untimely death, the Belgian side paid a remarkable tribute to the late Bafana Bafana defender.

Genk climbed to the top of the 2020/21 Jupiler Pro League standings after recording a seventh consecutive league victory during the club's 4-2 win over high-flying Royal Antwerp on Sunday afternoon.

Prior to the match, which was played without fans due to a spike in coronavirus infections in the country, both sides observed a moment of silence in honour of Ngcongca who was killed in a motor vehicle accident last month at the age of 33.

Genk also paid tribute to the former Mamelodi Sundowns star with a brief video montage and a remarkable tifo display in the stands which bore the defender's image and former jersey number, along with the phrase "RIP Anele. Forever our #16".

The club previously confirmed that No. 16 jersey Ngcongca wore during his time at the Cristal Arena had been retired following his tragic passing, "Number 16 will never be worn again in our club," a Genk representative told last month.

The Cape Town-born right-back made 279 appearances for Genk between 2007 and 2015, winning the 2010/11 league tile, two Belgian Cup trophies and the 2011 Belgian Super Cup crown en route to becoming a club legend.
