South African defender Joel Untersee has been linked with a return to Italian football as he looks to get his career back on track.

The former Juventus wing-back has been a free agent since leaving FC Lugano in Switzerland in August last year and has yet to find a new club amidst the global pandemic.

But this website understands Ascoli's new Sporting Director Ciro Polito has sounded out the 26-year-old as a new mid-season signing as they look to bolster their defence for the second half of the Serie B campaign.

The Roodeport-born talent previously won promotion from the Italian second-tier with Empoli while on loan from the Bianconeri and is said to be open to the idea of moving to the Marche region.

Untersee called up to the preliminary 2019 Africa Cup of Nations squad by former Bafana Bafana head coach Stuart Baxter but failed to make the final squad due to paperwork issues.
