Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu will have to wait to make his UEFA Europa League debut after being ruled out of Rangers' clash against Benfica.

Gers boss Steven Gerrard was speaking to the media ahead of the club's Europa League tie on Thursday night when he confirmed that Zungu and Ryan Jack would both miss the encounter through injury.

"Ryan Jack is a doubt for tomorrow's game and we won't know on Ryan until later on today whether he is available or not," Gerrard said, per the club's website.

"Zungu will be missing as well we are hoping to have him back in a week to 10 days' time he's not got a big issue but unfortunately he's not available for us tomorrow, and the rest is as it was from the weekend."

The 28-year-old has been ruled out of action since returning from international duty with Bafana Bafana earlier this month, having picked up a knee injury during South Africa's 4-2 Africa Cup of Nations qualification win over Sao Tome and Principe.

Zungu joined Rangers on a season-long loan from Amiens in October and made his debut during a comprehensive 8-0 win over Hamilton earlier this month, but he is yet to play in the European competition for Gerrard's team.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns star was an unused substitute in Rangers' 1-0 UEL win over Lech Poznan last month, but was not part of the previous fixture against Benfica due to visa complications.
