Banyana captain joins Scottish champions

In a move that has been described as "one of the biggest-ever signings in Scottish Women's Football", Banyana Banyana captain Janine van Wyk has signed for Glasgow City.

On Tuesday, the reigning Scottish champions confirmed that Van Wyk, who is the most-capped player in South Africa's history with 170 international appearances to her name, had signed for the club ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

"Glasgow City are delighted to announce the signing of South African National Team Captain, Janine van Wyk. The central defender is the latest addition to the Scottish Champions and without doubt one of the biggest-ever signings in Scottish Women’s Football," a statement from the club read.

The defender also spoke of her delight at making the move.

"I am extremely excited to start this new chapter in my football career with a football club that is known to be the best team in the Scottish top league," Van Wyk told the club's official website following the move.

"I look forward to playing in the UEFA Women's Champions League, win titles and most importantly continue to learn as much as I can about the insights of the game and hopefully add value to the squad with the experience I carry."

Glasgow City coach Scott Booth was also effusive in his praise for the 33-year-old, who has previously played for the likes of Houston Dash in the US and Fortuna Hjorring in Denmark, and backed her to be a key player in the upcoming season.

"We are absolutely delighted to bring Janine van Wyk to our club," Booth said.

"She has incredible experience and I feel this will be key for us this season. Janine captained her nation at the 2019 World Cup and is their record cap holder. I know that she will 100% lead by example and fit into our already talented squad."
