Football may be at a halt in Europe right now but Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau remains in line to join an elite group of South African legends this year.

Before the suspension of the Belgian top-flight due to the coronavirus outbreak that has swept through Europe, Tau's Club Brugge were coasting towards league honours.

After 29 games played, the 2019/20 Belgian Cup finalists hold a 15-point lead over second-placed Gent in the First Division A title race.

With Brugge also set to face Antwerp in the final of the Cup, Tau could add two major honours to his growing CV before the end of the current season.

However, league success would be one of the major milestones for the former Mamelodi Sundowns forward, as he would join an elite group of South African footballers who have won a top-flight title in Europe.

Dating back as far as the 1997/98 Eredivisie season, Bafana legend Benni McCarthy wrote his name in history books in his first professional season in The Netherlands.

Since then, the likes of Steven Pienaar, Bernard Parker and Thulani Serero have all lifted the Dutch top-flight crown.

McCarthy also won two titles during his time with FC Porto in the Primera Liga, which has often been overlooked due to the historic UEFA Champions League success under Jose Mourinho in 2004.

Amongst the legends is also McCarthy's long-time national team strike partner, Sibusiso Zuma, who won the Danish SuperLiga twice during his iconic stint at FC Copenhagen.

Siyabonga Nomvethe, Quinton Fortune and Tsepo Masilela is also included within the illustrious list of names that made their mark in South African football history.
