In-form Mbappe sends PSG 11 points clear

Ligue 1

Paris Saint-Germain ended a run of back-to-back draws in Ligue 1 with a 2-0 victory over Brest on Saturday evening.

Mauricio Pochettino unleashed three changes from the 1-1 draw at Olympique Lyon, with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, Thilo Kehrer and Georginio Wijnaldum recalled.

The Parisans were fortunate not to trail inside nine minutes through Irvin Cardona’s teasing attempt from an unmarked position in the area, but he was repelled by Donnarumma.

It did though took the Parisans two minutes from the half-hour mark to go ahead when Kylian Mbappe picked up a lay-off from Wijnaldum on the edge of the area and found the back of the net with a curling finish.

Brest maintained confidence and kept the balance of play intact inside the halftime phase, as PSG looked for a comfortable lead at the interval.

Although, the Parisans’ hand were forced at the restart when Wijnaldum succumbed to an injury and saw Danilo Pereira enter the field of play.

The host were denied a second goal two minutes following the break after Marco Verratti played a one-two on the edge of the area with Angel Di Maria before curling against the woodwork.

Five minutes later, the Parisans got their two-goal cushion when Kehrer applied a thumping first-time finish in the area from Nuno Mendes’ square ball.

Pochettino’s men looked to make it three within the remaining ten minutes of play from the head of Marquinhos following a corner-kick, but it was cleared off the line by Brendan Chardonnet.

The Parisans weren’t troubled by the missed opportunity, as they sustained the closing exchanges and registered the win.
