Zidane questions Benzema's France snub

LaLiga

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane admits he is just as surprised to see Karim Benzema miss out a call-up to the French national side.

Benzema has not been with the national side 2015 when he was accused of blackmailing his former teammate Mathieu Valbuena over an alleged sex tape.

Since then, head coach Didier Deschamps has snubbed the Los Blancos striker who missed the 2016 European Championships and the 2018 World Cup.

Benzema took his goal-tally to 23 in all competitions with a brace against Celta Vigo on Saturday and Zidane, who is a French legend, is still perplexed as to why his strike remains frozen out.

"You can't understand that Benzema doesn't play for his country," Zidane was quoted as saying by Marca.

"Lots of people don't understand it.

"But I'm happy as the coach of Real Madrid. He's done a great job for the team."

Since making his debut as 17-year-old in 2007, Benzema has scored 27 goals in 81 appearances for the national side.
