Xavi on Messi return: We will see...

Following reports that FC Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has asked the club to re-sign Lionel Messi, the head coach has now broken his silence on the Argentina international's potential return to the Camp Nou.

Earlier this week, it was claimed the Spanish boss has told the club's hierarchy he wants the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner back in Catalonia after the end of the 2022/23 season, when his current contract with Paris Saint-Germain is set to expire.

This came after Barca president Joan Laporta said in an interview that he feels Messi's chapter with the Catalan giants is not yet over.

Blaugrana boss Xavi has now had his say on a potential homecoming for the Argentine.

"Messi now is impossible," the 42-year-old manager said ahead of the Spanish giants' friendly against Juventus on Wednesday, per Spanish journalist Helena Condis Edo.

"He has a contract. He is the best ever. There is no point in talking now.

"In the future, we will see.

"The president [Laporta] already said that he hoped that it had not yet been the end of Messi at Barca."

Messi's future remains a hot topic after he endured a difficult debut campaign with the French giants, during which he was often criticised for not replicating the numbers he showed at Barcelona.

The 35-year-old has stated, though, that he is intent on returning to his best form next season, under the tutelage of new manager Christophe Galtier.
