The latest on Lionel Messi's future

With time ticking for FC Barcelona in their quest to retain superstar Lionel Messi, here is the latest on the Blaugrana captain's situation at the Camp Nou.

With little more than a week before the Argentine's current contract expires, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has been frantic in his attempts to get Messi to sign a new deal, but according to the latest reports, the wait is almost over.

Per Spanish publication AS, who cited Barcelona-based journalist Miguel Rico, the player has told the president he will sign an extension of two years, which will see him stay at the Camp Nou until 2023.

It is further claimed that, following LaLiga chief Javier Tebas' warning that the Blaugrana may not be allowed to register Messi next season if they do not reduce their salary budget, Barca have also managed to ensure that the Argentine captain's wages will fall under the league's salary limit.

The Spanish giants' all-time leading goalscorer is currently on international duty with Argentina at the 2021 Copa America, and an announcement on his club future is expected to be made in due course.

Laporta has been resilient in his mission to keep Messi at the Camp Nou, in addition to building a good squad around the team captain, something he promised to do in his election campaign.
