Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio has spent the entire season on the sidelines but managed to win a trophy for the historic club this weekend.

With Spanish football on hold because of the coronavirus outbreak, footballers traded the pitch for PlayStations for an event organised by the esports commentator Ibai Llanos.

Endorsed by LaLiga, more than 170,000 people watched Asensio, who has been sidelined with a serious knee injury, starred on behalf of Los Blancos.

The Spain international beat Aitor Ruibal of Leganés 4-1 in the final within the tournament which 18 LaLiga sides took part in.

The tournament, which was also broadcast on Spanish television, raised more than €140,000 (£129,000) to fight Covid-19.

The La Liga commentator Miguel Ángel Román joined Llanos in presenting the matches, and players gave interviews afterwards in another move to replicate the feel of a traditional match.

FC Barcelona and Real Mallorca were the only club's unable to participate due to their affiliations with Pro Evolution Soccer.
