Benzema backed for 2020 Ballon d'Or

In the aftermath of Real Madrid's LaLiga triumph, club president Florentino Perez has backed star player Karim Benzema to win the 2020 Ballon d'Or award.

On Thursday, Los Blancos were crowned champions of Spain for a record-extending 34th time after Benzema's brace inspired the club to a 2-1 win over Villarreal.

Real's surge to the title was largely inspired by the striker's performances this season, with the former France international leading the club's scoring chart with 21 goals for the league campaign.

The 32-year-old's tally is second only to FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi in the overall chart for the LaLiga season, but Perez believes no player has had a better year than the former France international.

"Benzema should be the Ballon d'Or," Perez said, according to Goal.

"I have not seen any player have as good a year as him."

The former Olympique Lyon star would become only the eighth Real Madrid player to lift the coveted Golden Ball award, with the most recent recipient from the club being Luka Modric in 2018.
