Real identify £85m Ramos replacement?

Real Madrid have reportedly set their sights on a defender from one of their biggest rivals as a potential replacement for Sergio Ramos.

Los Blancos are in the market for a centre-back after it was confirmed that club captain Sergio Ramos would be leaving the Santiago Bernabeu when his contract expires at the end of this month.

In addition, France star Raphael Varane has also been linked with an exit, with Manchester United and Chelsea believed to be hot on his trail.

According to Spanish outlet El Gol Digital, Los Blancos have now set their sights on Uruguay defender Jose Gimenez, and are ready to match Atletico Madrid's £85 million (R1.6 billion) valuation of the player

However, Real have reportedly also identified cheaper alternatives should Los Rojiblancos boss Diego Simeone refuse to sell the 26-year-old, with Sevilla's Jules Kounde and Villarreal's Pau Torres believed to be among them.

Gimenez has made 216 appearances for Atletico since joining the club in 2013, but has struggled to nail down a starting spot in Simeone's best XI of late.

He made just 26 appearances across all competitions last season as Stefan Savic and Mario Hermoso proved a formidable centre-back partnership that helped the Madrid club claim its first LaLiga title in seven years.
