For the second time in the space of a week, Lionel Messi controversially avoided a red card during FC Barcelona's 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao, with VAR seemingly turning a blind eye towards his rash challenge.
Messi played a starring role for Barca on Tuesday, providing the assist for Ivan Rakitic to score the reigning champions' winning goal, but could have been given his marching orders for a studs-up challenge on Yeray Alvarez.

Referee Gil Manzano and the VAR both deemed that no further action was necessary for the challenge, and Athletic's woes were compounded when the Argentina superstar assisted Rakitic's match-winning goal just three minutes later.
Messi's latest indiscretion comes just four days after he avoided a dismissal during his side's 0-0 league draw with Sevilla, when he shoved defender Diego Carlos to the ground in a heated confrontation.
Barcelona's victory over Athletic saw them return to the summit of the LaLiga table, three points clear of rivals Real Madrid, who take on Mallorca on Wednesday evening.
