New twist in Messi contract clause?

FC Barcelona are reportedly preparing a new historic contract for their record goalscorer and captain Lionel Messi.

Messi, 32, made global headlines in mainstream media last week but this time, not for his extraordinary feats on the football pitch.

It was revealed in Spanish press that Barcelona had included a clause in his contract, one he signed in 2017, that he could walk away from the club at the end of every season after the 2019/20 campaign.

His teammate and club stalwart Gerard Pique confirmed the validity of the claims shortly after but brushed off any doubts that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner would opt to activate the sensational option.

However, according to Mundo Deportivo, since the news went viral, the Blaugrana are now reconsidering their stance on taking his loyalty to chance by offering him a life-time contract.

With the Argentina captain's current deal expiring in 2021, the LaLiga champions are believed to be drawing up the new lucrative deal - with suggestions that he could retire elsewhere.
While European rivals have seemingly been ruled out, a switch to his boyhood club Newell Old Boys or a stint in the Major League Soccer is believed to have cause Barca to reconsider their stance.
