'Messi has power over no-name coach'

LaLiga

An insider at FC Barcelona has made a sensational claim about captain Lionel Messi amidst the club's continuation of hiring "no-name coaches".

Last week the LaLiga champions confirmed former Real Betis boss Quique Setien as the successor to Ernesto Valverde after the Supercopa exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

And after being unveiled as the new Blaugrana head coach, Setien expressed his disbelief after landing one of the biggest jobs in world football.

With no record of silverware within his career but with a reputation of playing an attacking style of football, Simon Kuper of ESPN FC, who is said to have had numerous conversations with club officials, has claimed that Messi holds more power than any of the recent managers.

"At this club, the coach isn't the boss. He doesn't determine how the team plays. The team's style of play is largely determined by the players, in particular by Lionel Messi," Kuper claims.

"Messi's low charisma and habitual public silence are deceptive. Although Barca won't admit it, Messi has unspoken veto power over most player transfers, coach appointments or major tactical decision[s]."

"As long as Barca have a team full of experienced, world-class players topped by Messi, plus the remnants of their Cruyffian house style, a strong coach would only get in the way."

The former Equatorial Guinea boss has started his career with the Spanish giants with two straight wins in all competitions.
