Just days after Lionel Messi confirmed he would stay with FC Barcelona, the Argentina superstar could now be faced with a pay cut at the club.
Following a protracted transfer saga that saw Messi hand in an official transfer request at Barcelona in August, the 33-year-old confirmed earlier this month that he would honour his contract and remain with the club for the 2020/21 season.
The six-time Ballon d'Or winner is set to hold talks with Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu in the coming days, and Spanish publication Deportes Cuatro has now claimed that the discussion could increase tensions between the player and the club.

Per the report, Bartomeu is going to request that Messi and his teammates to accept a pay cut as the Catalan giants try to alleviate its growing financial crisis, which has been compounded by an alleged €98 million (R1.8 billion) loss last season.
While it remains to be seen what percentage the players will be asked to forfeit, it is believed the Barca captain could face a significant reduction on the reported €77 million (R1.5 billion) he earns per year on his current deal.
