Following the news that Lionel Messi is said to have agreed a contract extension at Barcelona, some details included in the deal have seemingly been revealed.
The 34-year-old is a free agent after his contract expired last month, but is believed to be keen on staying at the Camp Nou, where he has spent his entire professional career.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that the forward has agreed new a five-year-deal. The 2021 Copa America champion and Player of the tournament is also expected to take a 50% pay cut, which is a significant decrease from his previous €500 million (R8.5 billion) contract.
Marca has revealed the reason as to why the six-time Ballon d’Or winner was willing to take the pay cut, claiming that Messi is reportedly expected to only play for the Catalan giants for the next two years and then move to an MLS club while remaining an ambassador for the Blaugrana.
The Spanish outlet reported that Barcelona is under pressure from their sponsors to announce a new deal for Messi due to problems regarding sponsors.
