Messi continues to make LaLiga history

Lionel Messi was once again the star of the show for FC Barcelona on the weekend, and his latest performance saw him add yet another piece of LaLiga history to his ever-expanding collection.

On Saturday, Messi played a starring role for Barcelona in their 1-0 win over Real Valladolid, setting up Arturo Vidal for the match-winning goal that has, in effect, kept the club's slim hopes of retaining the LaLiga title alive.

In doing so, the record six-time Ballon d'Or winner became the first player to record both 20 assists and 20 goals in a single Spanish top-flight campaign this century, and only the second behind former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry across all of Europe's top five leagues.

On a smaller, yet no less impressive, note, Messi's assist on the night also saw him become the first Barcelona in more than a decade to set up 20 goals or more in a season, following in the footsteps of former teammate Xavi Hernandez, who was the last, and indeed the only other player to reach the milestone.
