FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has given an update on Lionel Messi's contract situation at the club.
Messi has just won his first international title with Argentina, with the country having been crowned 2021 Copa America champions on Sunday.
However, the 34-year-old superstar's club future remains up in the air as he is technically a free agent after his contract with Barca expired at the end of last month.
President Laporta has been under pressure to get a new deal for Messi over the line, but no such contract has yet been signed as the club tries to figure out a way to afford his new wages within LaLiga's strict financial guidelines.
However, the Blaugrana president has now confirmed that contract talks between the club and Messi are "progressing adequately".
"Nothing is impossible," Laporta answered when asked for an update on the situation on Mago Pop show Nothing is Impossible, per Goal.
"[Messi's renewal] is progressing adequately.
"All the Catalans, Barcelona, Catalunya, and the entire football world are happy because Leo won the Copa America.
"It is very exciting to see the best player in football history get excited about winning a title like this and he made all of us cry with joy.
"He is very happy, we are all happy, I am happy for Leo who has managed [to win the Copa America], together with his teammates, and that Argentina are once again in the elite, and I am also happy for [Sergio] Aguero.
"I am happy for Messi's family, for Argentina, for Barcelona who are recognised, admired and loved for having this bond with Leo."
Barcelona are still in the process of freeing up the wage bill in order to hand Messi a new deal, and several stars have left the club already, with more seemingly set to follow.
