Messi extends Barca free-kick record

Lionel Messi lived up to his reputation as one of the world's best dead-ball specialists after scoring a club record-extending 50th free-kick for Barcelona on Sunday.

The Argentine forward took his tally to a league-high 28 goals for the campaign when he netted twice for the Blaugrana in their 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Valencia on the weekend, keeping his side's hopes of winning this season's LaLiga title alive.

Included in Messi's brace was a remarkable free-kick goal that ricocheted off the upright before nestling in the back of Jasper Cillessen's net, ultimately earning Barca the all-important three points.

Messi's effort from range saw him extend his record as the club's all-time leading free-kick scorer, with his strike seeing him reach the milestone of 50 free-kick goals from non-penalty dead-ball situations.

A total of 39 of those strikes have come in LaLiga, with the remaining 11 being spread across the club's other domestic and European competitions, while he has also netted 16 free-kicks while on international duty with Argentina.
