Real Madrid’s winning start to the LaLiga season was halted after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Valladolid on Saturday evening at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
Zinedine Zidane handed James Rodriguez his first start of the season, alongside Isco and Dani Carvajal, with Luka Modric missing through suspension.
The hosts were controlling the tempo of the match and Rodriguez had a chance to break the deadlock in the 27th minute with a free-kick from the edge of the box, although his curler sailed over the bar.
Karim Benzema came to close to finally finding the breakthrough for Madrid with seven minutes remaining of the first stanza after he was sent through on goal by Toni Kroos, but the Frenchman’s shot was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Jordi Masip.
Shortly after the break, Bale had another chance to the break the deadlock for the hosts, with a header inside the box that sailed wide of the upright. As a result, Zidane made his first change two minutes before the hour-mark by bringing on Vinicius Junior in place of Rodriguez.
Madrid were desperate for a breakthrough as Luka Jovic was introduce on 69 minutes for Isco. The Serbian almost made an immediate impact for Los Blancos, as his effort hit the crossbar with Masip well beaten.
Benzema finally broke the deadlock for Madrid with eight minutes remaining with a superb finish from the edge of the box, much to the delight of the Los Blancos faithful.
Howeve,r Sergi Guardiola silenced the home crowd two minutes before time, as he levelled matters for Valladolid with a strike past Thibaut Courtois, after a quick counter-attack as the encounter ended honours even.
