'Messi is harder to defend than CR7'

FC Barcelona star Lionel Messi is harder to defend than Cristiano Ronaldo, according to Former Germany international Arne Friedrich.

The superstar duo have been at the center of an on-going debate for the past decade, with a number former and current footballers giving their opinion.

Friedrich, who made over 80 appearances for Germany, feels Ronaldo was easier to mark due to the similarity in size.

"I was able to play against both Messi and Ronaldo," the 41-year-old told Goal and SPOX.

"If I had to commit myself to one, it would be Messi. He has a different centre of gravity, Ronaldo is more my size.

"Both are at the same level, but Messi was harder to defend for me because he had a different style of play.

Messi and Ronaldo have been the front-runners for the Ballon d'Or since 2008, with former winning six compared to the latter's five titles.
