Barca 'set date' for Messi contract

With Lionel Messi still not an FC Barcelona player despite reports that he will sign a new deal, the club has now reportedly set a deadline to announce the star's new contract.

According to Sport, the Catalan giants are aiming to reach a full agreement with Messi's camp within the next seven days, with the club keen to announce the new deal towards the end of next week.

It is believed the Argentine playmaker will sign a five-year deal that will see him take a 50% pay cut.

According to Football Espana, there will be various clauses in Messi's new contract that will make up for the salary decrease towards the back-end of his career, including the guarantee of an ambassadorial role once the star hangs up his boots.

It is further claimed that the club wants to get the Messi deal over the line soon after he returns for pre-season training on 2 August.

Barcelona are currently unable register their new players due to their yet unsolved wage cap issue, which has reportedly seen the Blaugrana attempt to impose salary cuts on, and sell, some of their higher-earning stars.
