FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed that he attempted to sign Neymar earlier this year, before Lionel Messi left the club.
The Brazilian winger joined the Catalan giants in 2013 from Santos for a then-club-record fee of €88.2 million (R1.4 billion), but after four trophy-filled years with the Blaugrana, he decided to leave the club to join Paris Saint-Germain in a world-record deal.
Despite the tricky dribbler leaving the Camp Nou in 2017, he remained good friends with Messi, and even thought about a return to Barca before the pair reunited in Paris, according to Laporta.

The Blaugrana president has now broken his silence on his pursuit of Neymar after winning the club's presidential elections earlier this year.
"We tried to sign Neymar," Laporta told Catalan news outlet TV3. "At that moment [after he was elected in March], it seemed like an interesting signing."
"He got in contact. He was crazy about coming.
"We interpreted fair play in another way at the time.
"If we had known all the rules [in La Liga], we would not have made that offer."
Speculation about Neymar and Messi's potential reunion began to escalate in 2020 when PSG's record signing said in an interview that the thing he wanted most was to play in the same team as the Argentine again.
In the end, Neymar got his desired outcome without having to leave Ligue 1.
