'Griezmann was not the player we needed'

FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has made an unexpected admission about Antoine Griezmann following the forward's loan departure to Atletico Madrid.

France star Griezmann made a surprise return to former employers Atletico on transfer deadline day, despite earlier reports suggesting that he would be staying in Catalonia after Lionel Messi's shock departure.

While it has been said that the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner's exit on loan from the Camp Nou was down to the club's financial situation and not for footballing reasons, Barca chief Laporta has now seemingly admitted that Griezmann should perhaps not have been signed for the Blaugrana to begin with.

"He was not the player we needed," Laporta told Esport3.

"I think he could have given more but the circumstances were complicated.

"Maybe he didn't fit in the Barca system."

While it appears that the Barcelona chief has suggested that they should not have bought the Frenchman, he also added that the Les Bleus attacker was "very alive, last year [as] he scored goals, especially in the Copa del Rey", and that his attitude "was always correct".
