Former FC Barcelona star Javier Mascherano has landed a new role after being appointed as a new LaLiga ambassador.
The former Argentina international, who made 206 LaLiga appearances for Barcelona and won five league titles, was confirmed as a new ambassador for the competition on Wednesday during a live Ambassador Presentation.
"I am proud to be part of this project and serve as an ambassador for the values of football and the best league in the world," Mascherano told LaLiga. "Furthermore, being able to share the experience with other great colleagues is very enriching."
The 36-year-old's appointment takes LaLiga's total number of active ambassadors to 30, which includes other former Barca stars Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Carles Puyol, Patrick Kluivert, Luis Garcia and Samuel Eto'o.
"Having Javier Mascherano as a member of the LaLiga Santander Ambassadors project is very important to us," Fernando Sanz, Head of LaLa Liga's Ambassador's program said.
"He perfectly embodies the values that we defend from this institution: competitiveness, teamwork and dedication I'm sure that with his help, this team of legends can only become greater."
Mascherano retired from football last year after a nearly two-decade-long career, which saw him turn out for the likes of West Ham United, Liverpool and Barca, among others, before hanging up his boots at Estudiantes.
