Diego Costa could be slapped with shock six-month prison sentence in the latest scandal of the Atletico Madrid star.
Costa, 31, is set to face trial on 4 June under charges of tax fraud and reports in Spain suggest that prosecutors are calling for six-months behind bars.
Spanish news outlet Cadena Ser claims the Atletico striker 'defrauded' the Spanish state of over €1-million for not declaring payments for image rights after joining Chelsea in 2014.
The report further adds that Costa is facing a fine of €507 208 (R9.9-million) on top of the potential time behind bars, in the latest footballer tax fraud scandal.
FC Barcelona captain Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho have all faced similar charges with suspended prison sentences due to being first-time offenders.
Laws in Spain also allow sentences of under two-years for non-violent crimes to be exchanged for fines, meaning Costa would have to add an additional €36 500 (R715 000) to his overall fine to avoid jail time.
