Atletico terminate Diego Costa contract

Atletico Madrid have terminated the contract of striker Diego Costa with immediate effect, the LaLiga leaders confirmed on Tuesday.

Costa returned to Atletico in January 2018 from Chelsea in a deal worth a reported €60-million but has struggled to replicate the form of his first stint that made him one of Europe's most fearsome strikers.

The arrival of Luis Suarez from FC Barcelona in the off-season further pushed the 32-year-old down the pecking order and after just 204 minutes of LaLiga football this season, he asked to be released.

"Atletico de Madrid and Diego Costa have reached an agreement for the termination of the striker's contract, which was to end on June 30, 2021," the club statement read.

"The striker asked to leave the club for personal reasons a few days ago and on Tuesday signed the termination of his contract."

Costa scored 83 goals and registered 36 assists in 215 games across all competitions, whilst lifting six major titles including the Spanish top-flight over two separate spells for Diego Simeone's outfit.
