Barcelona did not have a great 2020/21 season by their high standards with a third-place finish in LaLiga, but the club captain still had an impressive individual campaign.

Despite a stuttering start to the season due to off-field issues, the forward scored 38 goals and provided 14 assists across all competitions for the Blaugrana, and then helped his country end a 28-year trophy drought at the Copa in Brazil.

Messi was involved in nine of the 12 goals Argentina scored in that competition – netting four of those himself and providing five assists – seeing him become the favourite for this year's Golden ball, per Betfair.

Kane is another top contender for this year's Ballon d'Or, with the 27-year-old having helped England to their first major tournament final in 55 years before suffering defeat at the hands of the Italians in the UEFA European Championship decider.

The Tottenham Hotspur star also won his third Premier League Golden Boot in the 2020/21 season after firing in 23 top-flight goals, with a further 14 assists to boot.

Kylian Mbappe is also among the contenders for the prestigious prize, and while France's shock Euro 2020 departure at the round of 16 stage may dampen his chances, the 22-year-old still had an impressive individual season.

The French forward amassed 42 goals and 11 assists in 47 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain in the 2020/21 campaign.

Robert Lewandowski will also be hoping to win the award after the Ballon d'Or ceremony was cancelled in 2020 – scroll through the gallery above to see some more contenders for this year's Golden Ball award, according to Betfair!
