Sociedad troubled the host in the opening exchanges through an intelligent run towards the near side of the area by Alexander Isak, but his quest to goal was staved off by Carlos Casemiro.
However, it was Madrid that went the closest in the midway point when a header from Mariano struck the crossbar before Marco Asensio dragged the rebound wide.
The chances didn’t end there for Los Blancos as a looping header from Raphael Varane from a corner-kick a little later forced goalkeeper Alex Remiro to tip onto the top of the net.
Sociedad struggled to come out of their shell in the closing minutes to halftime after Luka Modric worked angle from a promising position to bring Remiro to a smart save with a powerful shot.

A renewed start to the second half saw the visitors go in front 55 minutes in through a flying header from the far post by Portu after a meeting a cross from out wide.
