Ollie Watkins grabbed a hat-trick as Aston Villa produced a sensational performance to thrash the champions Liverpool 7-2 at Villa Park on Sunday.
In the fourth minute, Watkins scored his first Premier League goal after a horrible mistake from Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian, who took an age to control a pass from Andy Robertson before selling Joe Gomez short. Jack Grealish picked up the loose ball and squared it for Watkins to sidefoot home.
Watkins had his brace in the 22nd minute. Grealish threaded him in down the left with an excellent pass and the new boy just drove infield, leaving Gomez in his wake before firing a rocket of a shot into the top-right corner.
Moments after Ross Barkley missed, Mohammed Salah scored and Liverpool pulled it back to 2-1. Diogo Jota brought the ball in from the left, Naby Keita spun in the area to feed it on to Salah, and he thrashed it into the roof of the net.
In the 35th minute, John McGinn extended Villa's lead via a deflection after He hit a low left-footed volley as a corner was cleared to him at the edge of the area, and the ball deflected off the shin of Virgil van Dijk and past a wrong-footed Adrian.
Watkins had a Premier League hat-trick against the champions in the 39th minute. A deep free-kick fell to Trezeguet in acres of space on the left and he put in a simple cross. Watkins was one of three players who could have turned it in for Villa and he headed home with aplomb.
Barkley grabbed the hosts' fifth in the 55th minute when he hit a left-footed effort from the edge of the area and it deflected again, spinning up off Trent Alexander-Arnold's boot and into the top-right corner.
Salah grabbed his second on the hour mark when Roberto Firmino found him at the edge of the area and he took one touch before firing into the bottom-right corner with his left foot.
Six minutes later, Grealish got in on the act, and yet again it was a horrible deflection. Villa pressed Firmino in midfield, Watkins found Grealish in his customary place on the left and his right-footed shot took a huge deflection off Fabinho and into the bottom right.
Grealish scored the seventh and final goal for Villa after he was put through on goal down that left channel yet again by McGinn and the England international had all the time in the world to stroke it past Adrian.
