Man Utd launch £50m bid for France star

International Transfers

Manchester United have reportedly made a bid of £50 million (R981 million) for a France star competing at the 2020 UEFA European Championship.

With Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer apparently considering Raphael Varane to be the ideal partner for club captain Harry Maguire in the heart of their defence, the Premier League giants have begun negotiations with Real Madrid with a starting bid of £50 million, according to Manchester Evening News.

After the departure of Sergio Ramos was confirmed earlier this week, Los Blancos are understood to want to keep Varane on their books unless their reported £80 million (R1.56 million) valuation is met.

However, the 28-year-old is rumoured to be keen to join fellow Frenchman Paul Pogba at Old Trafford.

Varane has one year left on his current contract but the La Liga giants are not wavering from their valuation as they look to pay off some of their reported €901 million (R15.1 billion) debt, with president Florentino Perez having previously spoken about the club not being able to afford any marquee signings in this window.

If the Frenchman were to be sold to United, new Real signing David Alaba would be viewed as his natural replacement at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Managerial legend Sir Alex Ferguson previously wanted the French international at the Theatre of Dreams in 2011 when the player was only 18, but narrowly missed out on his signature as Los Blancos got to him first, with the defender having gone on to win multiple trophies for club and country since.
