Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly set-up a semi-final clash with Bayern Munich at the FIFA Club World Cup after a 1-0 win over Al-Duhail on Thursday evening.
Mosimane went with a stern line-up, which included goalkeeper and captain Mohamed El-Shenawy, Ali Maaloul and Mohamed Magdy Afsha to mention but a few.
Ahly did not see a lot of the ball following the earlier exchanges, as the match drifted either end with chances few and far between for the respective outfits.
The Cairo Red Devils recovered and went on to break the deadlock on the half-hour mark with a clever finish from Hussein El Shahat off a loose pass from Walter Bwalya.
Bwalya reversed roles seven minutes later to double his side’s lead with a neat finish from a promising area, but it was chalked for offside by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
A double alteration from Duhail followed at the restart, with Mohammed Muntari and Almoez Ali filling in from the bench.
This seemingly brought renewed energy into them as a move close to the area from Edmilson Junior led to a shot at goal, but the defence managed to do their job with a solid clearance.
Duhail launched another threat midway in the second half with a powerful shot from an advancing area by Dudu, but Ahly goalkeeper El-Shenawy made his first save of the evening.
Chances came for either side in the closing minutes with Aliou Dieng dragging a clear opening wide before a superb save from El-Shenawy parried Muntari’s header.
However, the African champions held their nerve amidst the pressure to secure victory and a semi-final date with Bayern Munich on Monday evening.
