Distraught CR7 throws armband to floor

Euro 2020

A frustrated Cristiano Ronaldo threw off his armband and seemingly kicked it in anger after Portugal were dumped out of the 2020 UEFA European Championship by Belgium on Sunday night.

The defending champions were knocked out of the tournament after Thorgan Hazard scored the Red Devils' winner in the 42nd minute of the round of 16 tie, and with Portugal having failed to score from a reported 23 shots.

As the final whistle blew, a visibly upset Ronaldo was seen throwing his captain's armband to the ground after being unable to help his side retain their European title.

Then, as he made his way towards the tunnel, he dropped the armband again and kicked it, seemingly in frustration.

Portugal boss Fernando Santos later spoke of his team's disappointment at being dumped out of the competition.

"There are players crying in the changing room. They gave everything," he said, according to the Daily Mirror.

"Belgium had six shots, we had 29. Sincerely I don't have many words.

"We believed if we won this one, we would have gone on to win the next one.

"They scored, we didn't. It's football."
