Spurs star leaves on a free transfer

Jose Mourinho will be without one of his most senior figures next season after Tottenham Hotspur star Jan Vertonghen confirmed his departure from the club.

On Monday morning, following the conclusion of Spurs' 2019/20 Premier League campaign over the weekend, Vertonghen took to Twitter to confirm that his time in north London had come to an end.

The Belgium international joined Spurs from Ajax Amsterdam in 2012, and went on to make 315 appearances across all competitions, winning runners-up medals in the 2014/15 League Cup and the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League.

Vertonghen was also named in the 2012/13 and 2017/18 PFA Premier League Team of the Seasons, forming one of Europe's most formidable centre-back partnerships with countryman Toby Alderweireld in Spurs' backline.

The 33-year-old is the latest Premier League star to confirm his impending departure in recent days, following announcements from the likes of Manchester City captain David Silva, Liverpool's Adam Lallana and Chelsea winger Pedro.
