Tuchel: Why Lukaku was benched in loss

English Premier League

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has explained why Romelu Lukaku was benched during the defeat to Everton on Sunday.

The reigning European champions dropped points for the third time in their last five matches after going 1-0 to Frank Lampard's side at Goodison Park.

However, Lukaku surprisingly played no part against his former side as Tuchel opted for Timo Werner and Kai Havertz in the attack, although that did not pay off.

When asked about not playing Lukaku, Tuchel told reporters, “Because we brought Jorginho off. We only had three changes.”

The German tactician was pressed further about the side's shortcoming in front goal over the past month.

“If there is something I can do I will try it but if I knew about it I would have done it before," he said, as per Goal.

“For me the key is to have a clean sheet. Manchester United was a different game, more open and fluid, finally scored late and conceded straight away. For me it is more like the game against West Ham and we had a clean sheet and played without any big mistake and that gives us the chance to score late.

“If you install emotion and belief in a stadium like this, you struggle.”
