Pep 'contacts' Barca star for transfer

English Premier League

Manchester City have reportedly made contact with FC Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann over potential transfer this season.

The Catalan giants' financial troubles have been well documented since the start of the pandemic and they have to reduce their wage bill if they want to register their new signings and re-sign Lionel Messi.

As a result, a number of reports claim that Barcelona would now be open to selling the 2018 World Cup winner to help balance their wage bill.

FootMercato have reported that City manager Pep Guardiola has already spoken to Griezmann about a potential move to the Premier League as he looks to bolster attack.

The Citizens have also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane and Borussia Dortmund's Erling but Guardiola insists the club won't be spending big on a striker this time.

"At the prices (quoted), we are not going to buy any strikers," he told Catalan network TV3.

"It is impossible, we cannot afford it.

"All clubs are struggling financially, we are not an exception. We have Gabriel (Jesus) and Ferran (Torres) who have been incredible in this position.

"We have young players in the academy and we play many times with a false nine. There is more of a chance we aren't going to buy a striker for next season."
