Report: How Tuchel offended Lukaku

English Premier League

With Romelu Lukaku's loan move to Inter Milan now confirmed, it has been claimed that Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel offended the forward during their time together.

The German boss was said to have a strained relationship with the Belgian over the past few months, and this was no more evident than when the striker told Sky Italia in December 2021 he was unhappy with the way the manager utilised him.

Despite Tuchel later insisting the issue had been put to bed, the 29-year-old struggled to find a consistent run of form and game time, and found himself on the fringes of the squad, with the head coach even urging the star to take notes from Timo Werner, who worked his way back into the starting XI late last season.

With a change of ownership taking place at Chelsea in June, new co-owner Todd Boehly decided to go against the wishes of former club director Marina Granovskaia and ex-technical and performance advisor Petr Cech – both their departures from the club were confirmed over the past week – to keep Lukaku, and backed Tuchel's call to part ways with the forward.

With the player's loan return to the Nerazzurri coming less than a year after his club-record transfer to the Blues, Goal journalist Nizaar Kinsella has now revealed that Tuchel also once offended the Belgium international with a joke about Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte, which only added to their strained relationship.

"To see him talk so highly of Inter [during the Sky Italia interview] was an insult to Chelsea fans," he said on the Italian Football Podcast, per the Daily Express.

"And there was another incident behind the scenes that wasn't televised or anything like that.

"Someone told me that Lukaku and Tuchel were watching a Tottenham game and Tuchel said, 'There's your daddy', about Antonio Conte.

"It was just a joke, but apparently, it didn't go down very well with Lukaku."
