Rangnick reveals Utd's future captain

English Premier League

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has appeared to give his verdict about who could potentially take over the captaincy from Harry Maguire in future.

Ahead of United’s FA Cup clash against Aston Villa, the German coach named a matchday squad that saw Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo and Phil Jones miss out due to injuries.

Despite the trio’s absence, Scott McTominay rose to the occasion in the eighth minute as his header proved to be the only strike in the Red Devils' 1-0 win.

During the post-match press conference, Rangnick praised McTominay and David de Gea before suggesting the former could be in line to one day captain the English giants.

"He is an academy boy,” he said of McTominay, per the Express.

“His energy is amazing. He now also starts scoring goals and also with some leadership skills.

“I wouldn't be surprised if in a couple of years he would be the captain of this team.

"We have to develop the team into a clean sheet team and that was another one today but still David de Gea was outstanding again for me today.

“I would have wanted him to have less saves in total, I think we had four or five shots on goal but again we can still improve even in that area."
