Erik ten Hag's Manchester United have reportedly been dealt a massive blow, with one of their top transfer targets said to have rejected the opportunity to move to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are expected to sign a number of players in this transfer window after a tumultuous 2021/22 campaign in which they recorded their lowest-ever points tally for a Premier League season.
It has also been confirmed that a number of United stars will be moving on at the end of the month, including Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani.
Earlier in June, it was reported that one of the Manchester club's main targets for this window is Christian Eriksen, who is set to become a free agent at the end of June following a short spell with Brentford.
Reports then began to emerge suggesting that United were set to make an offer to the Denmark international as they look to win the race for the playmaker who is being courted by a number of clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur and the Bees.
According to The Guardian, however, Eriksen has decided to turn down the chance to play for Ten Hag's team as he would prefer to stay in London.
It remains a mystery as to how much first-team action United had promised the midfielder as current Red Devils star Bruno Fernandes occupies a similar position, but it is claimed the Dutch manager had emphasised the importance of signing the 30-year-old, along with FC Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong, to the club's hierarchy.
Ten Hag was said to have viewed the duo as critical to "the development of a new style of play in Manchester".
Brentford, meanwhile, are reportedly prepared to make Eriksen the highest-paid player in their history in a bid to secure his services once again, while it is understood that Antonio Conte's Spurs are yet to make a formal offer for the player.
