Lukaku linked with shock EPL return

English Premier League

Former Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku could be set to make a shock return to the Premier League after being linked with one of the Red Devils' biggest rivals.

Lukaku has reportedly emerged as a serious transfer target for United's cross-town rivals Manchester City who are said to have identified the Inter Milan star as a potential replacement for the club's record goalscorer, Sergio Aguero.

Aguero, who has missed large parts of this season through injury, is nearing the end of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and The Athletic report that City have shortlisted the 27-year-old alongside Southampton striker Danny Ings as possible contingency options in the event that the Argentine leaves.

Lukaku has been one of the world's leading strikers since joining Inter from United in 2019 and has scored 54 goals in 78 appearances for the Nerazzurri, and would bring with him a wealth of experience with him if he was to return to the Premier League.

Despite spending the last two seasons outside of England, the Belgium international remains the competition's 20th-top scorer of all time after netting 113 times in 252 appearances across spells with Chelsea, West Bromwich Albion, Everton and United.

City have also previously been linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland, who is said to be on the radar of a host of Europe's superpower clubs, including Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Liverpool and the Red Devils, among others.
