Man Utd pile more misery on Spurs

English Premier League

Manchester United got back to winning ways in the Premier League with a 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening.

Raphael Varane came as a welcome addition to United’s stall following an injury with Edinson Cavani also recalled from the heavy loss against Liverpool last Sunday.

Spurs, who had Giovani Lo Celso back in the side, started with the early promise after a free-kick by Lo Celso coincided with a clear chance for Heung-Min Son who from a tight angle blazed over.

The LilyWhites did get the ball in the net eventually just after the half-hour mark as Cristiano Romero crept into the area to poke in Eric Dier’s header, but the flag ruled out the strike.

After hanging about following a nervy start, United took the lead on 39 minutes after Cristiano Ronaldo’s volley at the back-post gave goalkeeper Hugo Lloris no chance.

Spurs missed the opportunity to level matters on the cusp of halftime when Ben Davies headed a corner from Lo Celso agonizingly over the top of target.

The Red Devils looked to have gone two goals up minutes in the second half after Ronaldo thumped in a lay-off from Scott McTominay following a sneak into the area, but it was disallowed for offside.

With Spurs hanging on albeit narrowly, the Red Devils eventually made it two towards the last 20 minutes as Cavani brought in a pass from Ronaldo to go on and beat Lloris.

The courage bit of play from Spurs continued late on and looked to be on the end of a breakthrough in a move involving Son and Harry Kane, with Marcus Rashford in for Ronaldo at the other end.

Rashford didn’t disappoint and with four minutes to go applied a clever finish from a one-on-one position after he got on the end of Nemanja Matic’s pass to wrap up a good win.
