Cavani seals comeback win for United

English Premier League

Manchester United came back from two goals down to edge Southampton 3-2 in a Premier League clash on Sunday evening, with Edinson Cavani netting a brace.

Summer signing Donny van De Beek made his first league start for United since arriving from Ajax Amsterdam, with goalkeeper David De Gea issued a 500th appearance in club football.

Following an even start to the match, Southampton raced into the lead midway through the first half when Jan Bednarek shrugged off a challenge from Marcus Rashford to turn home.

United were a tad unlucky not to go level on the half-hour mark through Mason Greenwood following a poor pass by Alex McCarthy, but the latter recovered to parry and deny Bruno Fernandes on the follow-up too.

It was two for the Saints three minutes from the half-hour mark when a sweeping strike from James Ward-Prowse proved too hard for De Gea who watched the effort flew past him.

A goalkeeping change right at the start of the second half saw United introduce Dean Henderson ahead of De Gea with Greenwood sacrificed for Edinson Cavani.

The Red Devils launched the comeback midway through the second half when Fernandes picked up a pin-point pass from Cavani to plant a composure finish past McCarthy.

Following a tentative quarter, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men levelled it up towards the last ten minutes when a shot from Fernandes deflected to Cavani who profited from the left post.

The Uruguayan had the final say at the death when he attacked a low cross at the near post to head into the bottom corner, helping United to a comeback victory in the end.
