Liverpool maintain title hopes at Saints

English Premier League

Liverpool kept themselves in the Premier League title race with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory away to Southampton on Tuesday night.

Harvey Elliot, James Milner, Joe Gomez, Takumi Minamino and Curtis Jones were all given recalls as the likes of Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho were not in the squad.

The visitors enjoyed a fairly good start, but it was Reds goalkeeper Alisson Becker who was called into action on 10 minutes to deny Armando Broja from close range.

Becker had to pick the ball out if his net on 12 minutes when Nathan Redmond opened the scoring for the home side when his strike took a deflection and sailed into the far corner.

Here are the highest-paid players in the Premier League this season:

It took a while for the Reds to get back in the game but they were rewarded on 26 minutes Minamino, who spent a season on loan at the Saints, sent a powerful strike past Alex McCarthy after being teed up by Diogo Jota.

The visitors had all the possession for the remainder of the opening half at St Mary's Stadium, but they failed to carve out another clear chance on target.

The Reds carried the momentum into the second half and went close on a couple occasions in the opening 10 minutes through efforts from Jota and Firmino.

Liverpool completed the turnaround in the 68th minute when Konstantinos Tsimikas' corner found Matip, who steered a header into the far corner.

Matip's header proved to be the clincher for the visitors, as Southampton failed to find a way past Alisson and his defence in the remaining stages of the half.

Klopp's men will head into the final day of the season with their destiny not in their own hands as they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers, while league leaders Manchester City take on Aston Villa.
