Liverpool thrashed Southampton 4-0 at Anfield and moved to within one point of Premier League leaders Chelsea on Saturday evening.
Jurgen Klopp restored Virgin Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Diogo Jota following their UEFA Champions League victory over FC Porto in midweek.
The Reds wasted no time for the opener as Jota attacked a pin-point delivery on the left by Andrew Robertson to apply a finish from point-blank range.
Southampton started to question the Reds in the midway stage through a galloping run from the left by Armando Broja off misplaced possession by the host, but goalkeeper Alisson Becker smothered.
Jota however dashed the Saints’ comeback hopes just after the half-hour mark when he peeled off a cross into space from Mohamed Salah to tap into an empty net.
It got worse for the Saints after exquisite piece of footwork from Thiago Alcantara on the edge of the area resulted in a powerful strike that deflected into the top of the net.
Here is a look at the highest-paid players in the Premier League!
The Saints put on a double substitution ahead of the second half in Nathan Tella for Che Adams and then Nathan Redmond ahead of Jan Bednarek.
It didn’t stop the onslaught from the Reds as centre-back Van Dijk popped up unmarked in the heart of the defence six minutes in the restart to tuck in a loose ball from a corner-kick.
Despite the comfortable cushion, Klopp’s men began to live dangerously near the latter exchanges with the Saints seeing a lot movement in the final entry.
Although, Liverpool regained dominance inside the latter minutes and were close to a fifth through Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s first-time strike but it was smothered.
The Reds though gradually began to see out the tie as the minutes began to tick away, thus it finished 4-0.
