Man City deny Liverpool top spot

English Premier League

Unbeaten Liverpool and Manchester City could not be separated on Sunday evening after playing to a 2-2 draw at Anfield.

The Reds were unchanged from the win over FC Porto, while Man City recalled Gabriel Jesus and Phil Foden, with Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez dropping to the bench.

The sides cancelled each other in the opening exchanges, but City carved out their first chance in the 21st minute after Foden threaded a through ball towards Bernardo Silva, who was denied by shot-stopper Alisson.

Kevin De Bruyne had a good chance to break the deadlock for the Citizens in the 33rd minute after he was picked out unmarked at the back post by Foden with a cross but the Belgian guided his free header over the ba.

Jurgen Klopp's troops were on the front foot coming from the half-time break, not giving City time to breathe with a high press and Diogo Jota forced a save out of goalkeeper Ederson five minutes inside the second stanza with fierce strike after turning on the edge of the box.

Sadio Mane eventually broke the deadlock for Liverpool on the hour-mark with a clinical low strike past Ederson after Mohamed Salah beat his marker on the right wing and had space to play a through ball.

Guardiola reacted eight minutes later by bringing on Sterling in place Grealish for fresh legs upfront while Klopp did the same thing in the same moment, as Roberto Firmino replaced Jota.

City found the equaliser just a minute later after Foden fired home a low strike into the bottom corner from the blind side thanks to a through ball by Jesus.

With the game was opening up, Salah restored the lead for Liverpool in the last 14 minutes from a moment of individual brilliance, as he got past a couple of challenges and unleashed a right-footed shot past Ederson at his near post.

The Reds' lead was short-lived, as the Citizens levelled matters again five minutes later after Joel Matip deflected De Bruyne's shot past a diving Alisson.

Fabinho had a glorious chance to snatch the winner for Liverpool in the last three minutes after a through ball that needed just a tap-in, found him unmarked at the back post but Rodri made a heroic goal-saving block and they shared the spoils.
