Arsenal off to flying start in Premier League

English Premier League

Arsenal got their Premier League season off to a positive start with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Friday night.

There were three debutants for the Gunners in William Saliba and the duo signed from the champions Manchester City Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus.

Arsenal made a positive start and could’ve been ahead after a ball up top from Martin Odegaard filtered to Zinchenko to dart inside and produce a save out of goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

It needed the Gunners just 20 minutes to hit the front when a cutback across the area from Zinchenko evaded Thomas Partey but allocated an unchecked Gabriel Martinelli who then duly converted.

Palace were nearly back on level terms towards the closing stages of the first half in the way of a defensive mix-up between goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and Gabriel Magalhaes.

The Eagles upped momentum late on and brought a fine save out of Ramsdale following a header from forward Odsonne Edouard off a cutback from Joachim Andersen in the box.

Arsenal struggled to contain the Eagles early following the resumption and nearly conceded off a one-on-one by Eberechi Eze following a peach delivery by Wilfred Zaha, but Ramsdale parried emphatically.

Relentless spell of pressure from the host thereafter materialized with balls in and around the area pinning the Gunners back and needing Ben White and co to numerous clearances.

It did little to rattle the Gunners in the latter period, as Eddie Nketiah came on for Jesus before Zinchenko made way for Kieran Tierney.

The Gunners absorbed everything thrown their way and nabbed a second with five minutes to play after Marc Guehi helped Bukayo Saka’s teasing cross past his own goalkeeper.

Arsenal sustained play with full-time in plain sight and at the end registered the win to start their campaign on a positive note.
